A chance to enjoy the 22nd Open Art exhibition at Beverley Art Gallery

The 22nd annual Open Art exhibition will be at Beverley Art Gallery from Friday, 6 December through until 29 February, 2020.

Entries were invited from all artists, whether amateur or professional, living in the East Riding or in Hull.

This year’s selectors of the successful entries were the internationally renowned artist Paul Clifford, and the co-founder of the Critical Fish magazine, and an artist herself, Lauren Saunders.

Paul Clifford is multi-media artist and academic. His recent work has focussed on a project to reflect his father’s involvement with the Desert Expeditionary Force in Egypt during World War One. This culminated in the ‘Legacy’ exhibition at Beverley Art Gallery in 2018. He has recently retired as Director of Fine Art at Hull University and lives and works near Malton.

Lauren Saunders is a Hull-based visual artist-activist who explores questions surrounding environmental ethics in her experimental drawing practice. She has exhibited nationally and has won numerous awards. ‘The Critical Fish’ is a collaborative project which promotes critical, experimental and accessible writing about art and visual culture.

The selectors awarded their First Prize to Steve Upton from Beverley for ‘Congrats’ and Penny Kealey from Driffield was highly commended for ‘Let’s Dance’.

Curator Helena Cox said : “I am thrilled that Beverley Art Gallery is hosting another Open Art exhibition – it’s always wonderful to see the amazing talent we have in the region. Last year I was particularly blown away by the breadth of techniques and styles presented, and I applaud all the artists that invest their time, energy and creativity into producing such fantastic works of art.

“I would like to extend my greatest thanks to all the artists who submitted their work – the walls of Beverley Art Gallery are coming alive with their art!”

The People’s Choice will be running throughout the exhibition – visitors can vote for their favourite entry in the show.

Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays : 9.30am – 5pm
