12pm – 8pm on Saturday 27 June 2026
Pier Street Pop-Up Space, Humber Street, HU1
Step into ‘Mycodarium’ – a relaxed multi-disciplinary pop-up event where art, mycology and queerness collide in a celebration of growth, connection, resilience and transformation. Explore the artwork on display, enjoy live performances and engage with a playful sharing of research and discoveries… brought to life through art, storytelling and creative experimentation.
Between April and June, The Queer Mycology Lab brought together participants Gemma Paterson and Amelia Sharp with mycologist Dr Elspeth Mitchell and artist Lauren Saunders for a new hands-on creative ecology project exploring fungi as guides for connection, transformation, and queer ways of being.
Across seven half-day sessions, the group co-created a practical programme of activities including mushroom forays, specimen handling, group discussion and reflection, drawing, ceramics, costume-making, writing, reading, and mushroom cultivation. Together, these activities supported a process of encountering fungi as living beings with their own roles, needs, and relationships within the world.
The project created space for dialogue between human understandings and fungal worlds – an opportunity to learn with fungi rather than simply about them – through curiosity, respect, shared discovery, and collective creativity. ‘Mycodarium‘ is an opportunity for us to share the ways in which fungi has inspired and taught us, and educate and inspire others on this beautifully ‘queer’ discipline.
