On Saturday 17 August 2024, Hull and East Riding Friends of the Earth turned Queen Victoria Square into a ‘beach of last resort’
The purpose of this slapstick creative action was to help gather public support for a new Environmental Rights Act, which would legally enshrine our rights to clean and safe waterways, forcing polluting organisations (i.e. water, agricultural and industrial companies) to change how they deal with sewage and waste so it doesn’t flood and poison our beaches and rivers and give the Environment Agency more power to fix situations and warn people (as opposed to simply commenting on the declining situation).
As the Hull Arts Lead I devised, led and project managed the local action as part of a national campaign. You can read more about the campaign in my Friends of the Earth blog HERE.
We secured over 120 physical signatures for the petition, countless more online and over a hundred unofficial signatures on our giant ‘chocolate’ ice cream – demonstrating that people are sick of this sh*t!
We also got an impressive level of media coverage, including BBC Look North, BBC News Online, BBC Radio Humberside, ITV Calender, TV Humber and the Morning Star.
