Together with Hull guitarist Phil Hargreaves and Merlin the Border Collie, I was invited by the Hull Artist Research Initiative to explore the qualities of their new building at 25 Francis Street, within a 25 hour ‘Re:View’ micro-residency period.
Within the context of my visual arts practice, I wanted to research into ways of responding to the heritage and architecture of place with song. This residency, which was in an abandoned and delapidated vehicle manufacturers warehouse, was a valuable opportunity in exploring methods of making and capturing sound between humans, non-humans and space in the context of site history and industry.
Our response was to record voice and atmospheric sound, creating a 1960s inspired soundscape and installation, rooted in the idea of a warehouse worker listening to the radio during their lunch break.
